Naval Ravikant Has A Net Worth of 65 Million, But His 3 Rules for Life Are Priceless
Going against these rules usually lead to feelings of being trapped and unfulfilled
Naval Ravikant is the founder of AngelList and a visionary who invested in Uber in its early stages.
He lives by three rules as one of the world's top thought leaders.
These rules include making life-changing decisions such as who you decide to live with, the work you decide to do for the rest of your life, and the location where you decide to live.
Here’s the breakdown:
Rule #1: Choose who you live with
We can't choose our family as young adults when we live with them but we can choose our roommates, our significant others, and most importantly who we marry as we will be sharing a roof where we lay our heads.
Reason 1 - Influences come in many forms. Do you want to live with someone who brings you joy or pain?
Reason 2 - Most likely the person you will spend the most time with is the person you plan to cohabit with or marry. This has an impact on your emotional and mental health.
Reason 3 - Your home will be your sanctuary whenever you want to escape the world. Make sure the person or people you live with won't disrupt that peace.
Rule #2: Choose what you do for work
You will spend over 90,000 hours at work over your lifetime.
That is more than half your life.
Don’t fall into the trap most people do by allowing life to dictate where they will work instead of taking control of their career and deciding what and where they want to work.
Reason 1 - Your career will make up the bulk of your time spent more than you spend at home. if you allow life circumstances to choose this for you, you are more than likely setting yourself up for a midlife crisis and depression.
Reason 2 - Choosing a career and where you will work should be an ongoing process because you may come across financial obligations that may trap you into a career or work environment you never planned to be in.
Reason 3 - Humans have this innate need to feel useful. You don't need to pick a career to save the world but you need to pick a career that makes sense to you.
Rule #3: Choose where you live
It takes people a long time to learn this one because everyone thinks where they grew up and have resided most of their life is the best place in the world.
This confirmation bias can be destructive if your environment does more harm than good.
Reason 1 - Choosing where you live will make or break your life experience. If you grew up in a location or environment that doesn't align with you, you always have a choice to leave.
Reason 2 - Not every location is going to align with you. Just because you are familiar with a location doesn't make it optimal. This is another way life circumstances choose for you.
Reason 3 - Your environment and the social culture where you live play a part in your emotional health. An example is if you are an introvert who enjoys peace and quiet then staying in a hustle culture city like New York will stress you out. Pick a place that aligns with you.
Often we get swept up in the trials and tribulations of life and we may allow them to make these important decisions for us.
How many times have you heard people say, "I had this goal before I had my family or I lost my job?"
These are life circumstances pulling at our strings like a puppet instead of us taking control of these 3 life rules and decisions.
Fantastic post! I especially agree with choosing where to live. Places have agency, too!
